Gerald Thompson

After retiring from Eli
Lilly as a
scientist/chemist and
executive in R&D, Jerry
returned to his longtime
interest in art (genetic:
father in sculpture and
painting, son in painting
and ceramics).  At the
Indianapolis Art
Center, the would-be
oil painter lost his way
and through serendipity
found glass blowing.
Jerry has primarily
studied with Ryan
Gothrup at the Art
Center as well as with
Jerry Catania at Ox
Bow.  He resides in
Indianapolis with his
wife and daughter;
three older sons are
scattered around the
country.

Studio (“hot shop”)
work is done both at
GRT Art Glass and at
the Indianapolis Art
Center.  Exploration in
Muranese or Venetian
glass blowing
continues including the
incorporation of
murrina and of
zamfirico cane as well
as the techniques of
incalmo and rotations
of the axis.  Glass
pieces are created to
explore the
combination of form
with design and color,
and as a result the
forms whether formal
or organic are not
specifically created
with function in mind.
Collectors do find
functional aspects in
some pieces, and
blown glass art which
is clearly functional can
be commissioned by
Jerry.
